Enjoying The Artistic Sand Sculptures In Parksville On Vancouver Island
We found so much variety in the artistic sand sculptures in Parksville on Vancouver Island. We planned our week escape to Vancouver Island specifically to visit the Parksville Beach Festival and enjoyed the Sand Sculpting Competition and Exhibition.
The formal judging was done on the Sunday. So we planned to visit early the next week when we knew the crowds would be smaller. And we hoped the sand sculptures would still be in great shape. Despite some vandalism to the sand sculptures during construction, we saw most of the collection as designed.
We were amazed at the beautiful artistic display we found when we wandered around the sculptures.
Fun At The Parksville Beach Festival
The Parksville Beach Festival (“Beachfest”) was held for about 5 weeks in the summer every year from mid-July until early August. The festival provided lots of family fun with weekend concerts, daily buskers and various family events. Held at the Parksville Community Park & Beach, we found lots of parking when we visited.
The big draw of Beachfest for us was always the sand sculpture contest. We planned to visit the previous year but could not get both hotel and ferry reservations. But this year we planned early and were successful around the time we wanted to see the sand sculptures. And even saw so much more local art on this visit to Vancouver Island.
Sand castles were always a big draw for us when we travelled. We planned a full day outing and explored a major sand castle competition at Sand City in the Algarve. We caught sand castle displays as afar away as Durban in South Africa and on a cruise port stop in Warnemunde Germany. When we visited the annual Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) when we lived in Toronto, sand castle art was on display rivalled only by the butter art!
We were always amazed at the creativity and local flavour we found in sand art. So we were quite excited when we finally planned our visit and saw the artistic sand sculptures in Parksville on Vancouver Island.
Official Contest Winners
Every year there was a new theme for the sand sculpture contest at the Parksville Beach Festival. The year we visited, the theme was “Beauties & Beasts”. The sculptures presented a mix of fantasy, nature and imagination.
The official judging of the sand sculptures happened on the Sunday before we visited. We visited while David was still hobbling about on his walking boot after our adventures in Egypt. But the path was firm enough for walking around with his cane. A plastic bag over the walking boot ensured we did not take sand back with us!
The winners were marked so we knew who the official judges deemed to be the “best”. The winners showed variety in topics and artistic detail.
We were interested in the contest results when we visited the artistic sand sculptures in Parksville.
Lots Of Options For The People’s Choice
In addition to formal judging, the public voted for their favourites. When we paid our entrance fee, we each got one token to put into the box for our favourite sand sculpture.
We wandered slowly around the sculptures and admired the great diversity in the sand sculptures created for the “Beauties & Beasts” theme. The artistic sand sculptures in Parksville amazed us with their quality.
Not surprisingly, David and I picked different favourites. But it was hard to limit the selection to just one of the beautiful pieces of sand art.
Amazed At The Detail In Sand Sculptures
While the overall sculpture drew our attention as we wandered, it was the fine details in the sculptures that amazed us. We looked closely at the detail and were truly amazed.
The artistic talent on display in the artistic sand sculptures in Parksville was humbling. With little artistic talent, it always amazed me at what could be created with just sand and water.
Things We Learned About Sand Sculpting
We learned some interesting things about official sand sculpture contests when we visited the artistic sand sculptures in Parksville:
- Special sand was used because beach sand contained bits of shells, pebbles and often other debris
- Sculptors had a fixed amount of sand they must use to create the sculpture
- Sculptors got a fixed amount of time to create the sculptures. For Beachfest, they had 30 hours.
- Only water was used in the sculpture creation. But a special mixture of white glue and water was coated the sculptures to keep them intact after completion.
- Wooden or plastic forms could be used in the creation of sculptures but were removed when completed
Sand sculpting contests are held all around the world. At the Parksville Beach Festival, we read the cards on each sculpture and saw competitors from far and wide.
The prize money was a draw – up to $3,600 for an official winner and $2,000 for each competitor too. More money was awarded for “fan favourite” sculptures. The travel costs for participants was covered by the Beachfest sponsors. Some people proved to be so talented they were hired to do sand sculpting as a career. For others, it was just another interesting medium to display their artistic talent.
Great Variety In The Artistic Sand Sculptures In Parksville
We delighted in wandering through the artistic sand sculptures in Parksville. This artistic endeavour was a key driver for this planned visit to Vancouver Island. We were happy to know that the sand sculptures would still be on display for many more weeks so more people could enjoy them too.
But this was not the last art treats we found on this short vacation. The wooden carvings we found as we explored Campbell River after our stop in Parksville added yet more beautiful art to admire.
