Much To See And Do On A Luxury Stay In Savannah
We enjoyed a luxury stay in Savannah at the Perry Lane Hotel. It was our first visit to this charming city. The lovely hotel delivered such an amazing customer service experience that it was hard to leave the hotel. But we still found so much to see and do in Savannah as we wandered for 6 days around the city. We sure ate our way around town!
We got a first look at the city when we took the Old Savannah Trolley tour. Then we went back and explored more of the squares and city architecture. The waterfront drew us in to explore on land and then on a paddlewheel riverboat tour. We even went out one night and enjoyed the Jersey Boys show at the Historic Savannah Theatre.
Travelling South From Toronto
Heading south from Toronto in the winter months was usually pretty easy. There were far more routes available when Canadians escaped the cold. But we found no way to get to Savannah as a direct flight.
There were several connection options but we finally chose a route through Washington DC. We hoped Washington was far enough south to not be impacted by winter travel delays. We ensured we had enough time for our connections even with terminal changes. A long delay on our return trip added unwanted time to our return trip.
With two short flights each way, we travelled on the smaller Embraer jets. Our trip to Savannah was only 6 days so we were determined to travel with carry-on only. This smaller plane made packing just a little more challenging! But we were pretty pleased with ourselves when we successfully made it through without a visit to the laundromat!
Overall our travel days were over 8 hours for a in-flight time of about 2.5 hours. Next time we will seriously consider a direct flight to Atlanta and a rental car! By the time we finally arrived, we were tired but happy to begin our luxury stay in Savannah.
Staying At The Charming Perry Lane Hotel
We booked our 6 day stay in Savannah at the Perry Lane Hotel. All of our research suggested this Luxury Collection Hotel in the Marriott group was known for its excellent customer service.
On arrival, we were greeted with a glass of champagne. There was even rosé bubbles for me! We were a bit early for the normal check-in time. The front desk clerk apologized for the 10 minute wait and offered to buy us a drink at the bar – even as we stood with champagne in our hands!
When we were escorted to our room, we found a lovely upgraded corner room. Great upgrades were always a treat with our Marriott Bonvoy Elite status. Even without a bathtub, the large shower was a great treat. The welcome amenity included a charcuterie tray, sweet treats and a bottle of wine. This was just the start of the treats we received!

The hotel reached out by email in advance to confirm any special requests. We visited Savannah for my big milestone birthday and David worked with the hotel team to ensure that each day there was a new birthday surprise planned. And I even got the tastiest birthday cake!

The Perry Lane Hotel was a perfect base for a luxury stay in Savannah.
Amazing Customer Service On Our Luxury Stay In Savannah
The Perry Lane Hotel was a five star hotel and we anticipated great service. But at every interaction, this hotel exceeded all expectations of what world class customer care looks and feels like.
The staff at the Perry Lane Hotel were empowered to delight clients and to “make things right”. When we were asked what a good welcome amenity might be, these chocoholics said chocolate. The next night a tray of chocolates was delivered. When we questioned why the hotel had stopped providing pralines, we soon received a box of pralines.

When the housekeeping supervisor checked on our room, he saw us working on our laptops on our laps. He immediately ordered a desk, chair and coffee maker brought to the room. When we went to the Peregrin Bar on the hotel rooftop for a birthday meal, the staff greeted us with champagne and “Happy Birthday”.

These were just a few examples of the proactive service delivery that went above and beyond our expectations. Each gesture made our luxury stay in Savannah so extra special.
Enjoying Our Base At The Perry Lane Hotel
When we wandered around both of the Perry Lane Hotel buildings, we found lots of little spots to sit and relax. And everywhere we looked we discovered interesting pieces of art.

The rooftop terrace held the Peregrin Bar and the outdoor swimming pool with another small lounging area. It was cool the first few days of our stay. But as soon as the sun stayed out, we headed up to the pool and enjoyed this outdoor space. We found a great spot for views over Savannah.

For families and big kids, there was even a small arcade room. The popcorn machine was full every evening for free snacks!
There was so much to enjoy on our stay at the Perry Lane Hotel that we were tempted to never leave. But we knew there was much to see exploring the sights in Savannah.
We Explored The City Sights
We liked to start our visit to a new city with a tour. In Savannah we found many ways to tour the city. We ultimately decided to take the Old Savannah Trolley tour. While this was a hop-on-hop-off tour it was so busy on the day we toured we decided to just use the trolley tour to get a first look at all sights. Our bus driver narrated the history of the city and we saw many key historical sites of interest.

We got our first view of many of the 22 city squares from the trolley tour and we wandered through many of them as we walked around Savannah. The Spanish Moss was an iconic local attraction in the trees.

We found the different squares fascinating and varied in design, history and memorials.

Surrounding all the amazing green spaces in the squares we found a stunning variety in architecture. We admired the houses on the “prettiest street in Savannah” as we wandered under the tree canopy on Jones Street. Museums and historical sights all throughout town offered more insight into this interesting city.

We saw many churches as we wandered around Savannah. But the church steeples we saw from above even drew us inside the Cathedral Basilica of St John the Baptist.

We wandered the city on our luxury stay in Savannah and were entranced by all we saw.
Visiting The Riverside Area From The Land
We slowly strolled along the waterfront and took in the sights. The Georgia Queen riverboat joined a steady parade of container ships heading under the Talmadge Memorial Bridge.

We spent some time wandering through the JW Marriott Savannah Plant Riverside. The hotel was a treasure trove of historic artifacts, colourful geodes and agate. In each of the three different buildings we found interesting art and even a large music display at the interactive Gretsch Museum.

When we walked up from the waterfront and wandered along Bay Street we got a good look at the City Hall building during the day.

We enjoyed the very different vibe of the city in the Riverside area on our luxury stay in Savannah.
A Paddlewheel Tour At Night
We wanted to see the Riverside area from a different perspective. So we booked a paddlewheel riverboat cruise on the Georgia Queen with Savannah Riverboat Cruises for sunset and dinner.

We cruised under the Talmadge Memorial Bridge and back. Going past the Savannah Convention Centre, we saw the ferry boats that crossed between Fig Island and the riverfront in Savannah.

As darkness set in we got a great night view of the sights in the Riverside area we saw from the land. City Hall was all lit up at night.

It was great to see the city from the water on our luxury stay in Savannah.
A Night Out On Our Luxury Stay In Savannah
The Historic Savannah Theatre was located close to our hotel. This was the oldest continuously running theatre in the United States and it offered local entertainment. We did not know much about the Jersey Boys show but thought it was a fun option for an evening out.

When we heard the music of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons we found many songs we knew well. We enjoyed the story and the production definitely kept us dancing in our seats.

On a luxury stay in Savannah, it was great to add some live entertainment and a good night out.
Eating And Drinking Our Way Around Town
Before we visited we knew that Savannah was a great spot to eat well. And we sure did. Our Marriott Bonvoy Elite status free breakfast provided a great variety of tastes. We even tried the local version of grits mixed with cheese and cream. This was still not our favourite morning treat. But the clafoutis pancake-like treat was a tasty mix of crepe and pancake.

We often grabbed lunch when we were out exploring the sights in Savannah. We looked for lighter and healthy options. But sometimes settled for local specialties that were tasty but less low calorie.

We had several meals at the Perry Lane Hotel. The main Emporium Kitchen and Wine Bar had a good variety of meal options. One night we joined a special session at the hotel for shrimp tasting! We enjoyed an interesting selection of small bites Peregrin Bar on the hotel rooftop.

For my special birthday dinner, we went to the Riverside area to Belford’s Seaford and Steak Restaurant. We enjoyed a great meal and had some well-aged beef. Even if I had to deal with a birthday sparkler on my dessert.

Between the sweet treats we got at the Perry Lane Hotel every day and the amazing food we found in Savannah, we were well fuelled for our luxury stay in Savannah.
Iconic Savannah Food Options
No visit to Savannah was complete without a visit to one of the River Street Sweets stores. We enjoyed a tantalizing and tasty visit as we sampled our way around the store. We went in for the pralines and discovered gophers. Children loved the candy wall. And we could not leave without the chocolate caramel popcorn.

A visit to Byrd’s Famous Cookies was another sweet treat. The cookie bar was a great way to find a new favourite cookie.

Of course we could not pass on the Chocolatier shop close to our hotel. Especially the colourful Easter treats we found.

As we wandered in Savannah we learned all about the open container laws that let us wander with alcoholic drinks. It reminded us of being back in New Orleans.

And the treats were not just for humans. We smiled when we saw the WoofGang Bakery for our furry friends.

We were not surprised with the variety of food we found on our luxury stay in Savannah. There were treats for everyone to enjoy.
