See Some Art In Prince Edward County Ontario

We were delighted when we got a chance to enjoy some of the art in Prince Edward County. On our first stay in this lovely part of Ontario, we planned a relaxing stay. And we wanted to sample the food and drink in the area. So we were excited when we got a small taste of the art around the county.

Most of the art we saw only briefly on this visit. But we enjoyed several wanders through the Oeno Outdoor Sculpture Garden at Huff Estates. We found such a great variety of fun and colourful pieces.

A Fun Variety In The Art In Prince Edward County

We liked to find local art and artistry when we travel. So we were interested when we read about the Arts Trail in Prince Edward County. There were about a dozen local studios and galleries on the map. The art covered paintings, glass works, fine silk and so much more. As we drove around the county, we often saw the distinctive blue Arts Trail signs.

It was easy to see we were in a part of the country that liked its outdoor art. We kept seeing these interesting and colourful patterns on the buildings in Prince Edwards County. With a little research we learned these were called “Barn Quilts”. The idea was that the Barn Quilts were replicas of actual fabric quilts. They were typically an 8 foot square painted on wooden boards. We saw them mounted on a fun variety of buildings on our drives.

We visited outdoor sculpture gardens in many places around the world.

So it was not surprising that on this first visit to Prince Edward County, we enjoyed the Oeno Outdoor Sculpture Garden. It was the kind of art exhibit we loved to explore.

The Oeno Outdoor Sculpture Garden At Huff Estates

We stayed at the Huff Inn and could not pass on a chance to wander in the Oeno Outdoor Sculpture Garden on the property. There was an indoor exhibit that we missed. But we explored the large outdoor display. We got our first view of sculpture art in pieces located by the main building. Although we did go back a second time to find the fun zipper on the ground!

Oeno represented over 60 sculptors. The works were in a variety of mediums – glass, bronze, steel, granite, wood, fibreglass and resin. A wide variety of different subjects were covered.

We did our first visit as the sun started to go down. And then went back in the morning for a view with different light. It was awesome to have this large display of art in Prince Edward County all to ourselves on both visits.

Wandering Through The Art And Gardens

The sculpture pieces were well separated around the beautiful gardens. The first piece we spent some time with was “A View From The North”. It was a man sitting back just enjoying his view of the gardens. From a distance it looked like the piece was made from wine corks. A quite fitting piece to start with at an outdoor sculpture garden located on a winery!

We saw many abstract pieces grouped around the property. We looked at the groupings from different perspectives. And scattered around we found more interesting abstract pieces. One piece was artfully displayed inside a vine-terraced structure.

A Great Variety In The Outdoor Sculptures

As we wandered around the gardens we were intrigued by the variety in the outdoor sculptures at the Oeno Gallery. There were sculpture pieces that were amazing in the details.

A number of sculptures were colourful and easily identifiable shapes. And some presented a reflective view.

We found a fun variety of iron figure sculptures as we strolled along. They varied in size from life-like down to small pieces we might have missed in the lavender in the garden. And they were posed in fun stances.

We were glad we saw this outdoor sculpture display when we looked for art in Prince Edward County.

More Sculptures Around The Huff Estates Property

While the vast majority of the outdoor sculptures were located in the outdoor sculpture area, we found many other pieces around the Huff Estates property. A knight on a horse greeted us. And we saw a fitting tribute to the Huff Inn – a display of suitcases called the “Travelling Show”.

When we went wine tasting at the Huff Estates Winery, we found more interesting art. As we approached the winery we found a second Fire Cone piece that was similar to the in the main outdoor exhibit. The colourful beaded piece by the door was called Sunset On The Lake. And looking out over the vineyard, we found the artistic cloud sculpture (Cumulus).
