A Fun Taronga Zoo Wildlife Experience In Sydney
We had such a fun Taronga Zoo wildlife experience on our longer stay in Sydney. With over 5,000 animals, there was an animal to delight everyone. The zoo had a good selection of local wildlife like koalas and kangaroos. And we also saw some African wildlife we saw close up on our safari trips to Africa.
We found it easy to grab a ferry from Circular Quay to the Taronga Zoo. And on our return trip we took the bus right back close to our hotel in Sydney. We chose to wander around the zoo on our own and took in two great shows. But the zoo also offered a number of wildlife encounters for a more in-depth visit.
Booking Different Adventures
We bought our zoo tickets online in advance and saved a little bit. We found tickets that covered other tourist spots and the ferry too. But since we purchased an Opal card for transportation during our Sydney visit, we did not need a combination ticket. When we visited the zoo we studied the zoo map with show timelines and then wandered on our own.

We knew there were a number of special experiences for very small groups for an additional price. Each encounter was offered one or more times a day. Animal encounters were offered with koalas, capybaras, giraffes, meerkats, dingo dogs, reptiles and penguins. The encounters provided more education and close up meetings with the wildlife.
There were other encounters that let people be zoo keepers. The groups were for different age groups. Each small group worked with experienced senior staff in their regular wildlife care activities. Our son Nick actually did an overnight zoo keeper stay at the Taronga Zoo. It was an experience he talked about to this day.

The extra encounters provided deeper engagement at the zoo. But we did did not plan one of those treats for our Taronga Zoo wildlife experience.
Discovering Australia Animals
We normally do not visit zoos as we travel. But we heard a lot of good things about the Taronga Zoo. Taronga was known for its commitment to animal care and was a strong advocate for animal welfare.
Since our longer stay in Sydney kept us close to the city, we missed opportunities to see Australian wildlife in their natural habitat. So the Taronga Zoo was a good option to enjoy this treat.
We entered the Koala enclosure and searched the trees. The koalas clung to the trees or settled high in the branches for a snooze. We also found the kangaroos in several spots. But they too were settled in and not bounding about.

The emu birds wandered about freely in one area. While the capybaras just stood still and watched us! A lone dingo dog lay in the sun on the top of a rock.

We enjoyed the chance to catch several native Australian animals as part of our Taronga Zoo wildlife experience. We even went into the Nocturnal Exhibit and caught a few species like Platypus and Bandicoots that only came out after dark.
African Animals On A Taronga Zoo Wildlife Experience
We travelled in Africa many times and have enjoyed some great African animal encounters. At the zoo, we saw the giraffes and enjoyed watching as they were fed. The one tiger we saw strolled around its enclosure. And the rhino cooled off in the water as we watched. We even saw one black bear peeking out at us.

So far we missed seeing gorillas on our travels in Africa. We were drawn into the gorilla area by the fun sign in the park. And we watched a sole gorilla eat and play.

We loved seeing the animals in their natural environments on our travels in Africa. But it was fun to see the great African exhibits on our Taronga Zoo wildlife experience.
Sea Lion Water Fun
When we got to the zoo, we checked the timing for the “Seals for the Wild” water show. We enjoyed some great water shows on our travels. And often found seals and sea lions close to our home in British Columbia in Canada. But a water show was always fun.
We lined up before the entry time and were glad we did. Many large groups of school kids entered first. We were worried there would be no room left but were surprised at how big the spectator area was for the pool show. We grabbed the little shade that was left and settled in for the show. Throughout the show, the trainers explained the sea lion behaviours and how the training worked.

The trainers took the seals and sea lions through the many tricks they learned. Many times the people in the front rows got splashed by the playful entertainers.

Our Taronga Zoo wildlife experience sure provided an entertaining water show. We learned that there were penguins native to Australia but we missed finding these penguins at the zoo. But then we have had so many great penguin experiences on our travels that we were not too disappointed.
An Engaging Bird Show
The other show we wanted to see at the Taronga Zoo was the “Free Flight” bird show. We went early and sat at the far back on the side where we were told the audience would be engaged in the show. It was fun to be close to where the audience was engaged in the bird show. Two cockatoos landed on the guy sitting beside us as he stood still like a tree.

The bird handlers put on a great show as different types of birds flew in and landed on the handlers. An owl launched and landed on the handler up in the stands.

We loved the entertaining bird show and were so glad we planned the time to enjoy this great fun. And as a special treat, the bird theatre also provided a most stunning view back to the harbour in Sydney. This was such a great way to finish our Taronga Zoo wildlife experience.

Glad We Planned A Fun Taronga Zoo Wildlife Experience In Sydney
We were very happy we planned a day on our stay in Sydney to enjoy a fun Taronga Zoo wildlife experience. It was great to see some of the local animals from Australia. And we enjoyed the antics of the African animals too. The water and bird shows added to this fun day.

Looks like a fun day in Sydney 🙂
We were surprised at how much we enjoyed our day. But good to go early and avoid the crowds!
We visited Taronga Zoo last year and the bird show was definitely my daughter’s favorite!
The bird show was our favourite too.
Looks like a fun day at an excellent zoo. Would love to see the bird show.
We were glad we got a recommendation to see the bird show. Made sure to put in on our day plan.
Looks like a great way to see animals that are difficult to spot in the wild. reminds me of the singapore zoo in many ways, especially the bird show!
We were sad we missed the Singapore Zoo. Good to know it is worth a visit.
We also rarely visit zoo’s during our travels. It is wonderful to hear that the Taronga Zoo is so committed to the well being of their local and African animals.
We were definitely pleased with what we saw at the Taronga Zoo.
Zoos can be so hit or miss, but this looks like a really great experience! So cool to see all of those Australian animals up close and I bet the bird show was awesome!
We were happy to see so many of the Australian animals. And a fun bird show too!
We are returning to Australia in 2027 with friends. Keeping this for something we have yet to do. thanks for the tip!
I am sure you will enjoy returning to Australia. We too are going back in 2027.
Such a cool thing to do. Definitely added to my next trip to Sydney!!
Visiting the Taronga Zoo was a great recommendation we got for our visit to Sydney in Australia.
Leigh, I could look at your photography all day. Great post.
Thanks! So many great things for photos at the Taronga Zoo in Sydney.
I don’t usually visit zoos either when I travel abroad but this zoo looks amazing. I would enjoy the bird show! And who doesn’t want to see a koala. Would you recommend dedicating a half or full day to visit the zoo?
We visited when the zoo opened to avoid the crowds and left about 2pm when it was too busy for us. We did not need a full day. But we did not pay for any of the extra experiences.
It appears that you had good weather, while I was there on a rainy day. The weather can greatly affect one’s perception of a place. I would have liked to see the bird show that I missed. Your son’s overnight zoo keeper experience must have been quite special.
We had great weather the whole time we were in Sydney this time. And perfect weather for the Taronga Zoo visit. So glad the bird show was recommended to us.
Thank you for your post and for making us part of the experience! I called my 3-year-old daughter to come along to see all the photos of the animals and she loved it as well. We have not been to Australia, but we certainly plan to come when my daughter is a bit older.
There were so many great wildlife experiences for kids of all ages on our visit to Taronga Zoo. Glad your daughter enjoyed the pictures!
Taronga Zoo looks like a fantastic place to spend a day in Sydney. I love that it combines Australian wildlife like koalas and kangaroos with animals from around the world. The ferry ride across the harbor must make the visit even more special. The animal encounters sound amazing too, especially the chance to meet giraffes or penguins up close. Thanks for sharing your experience!
We were definitely happy we visited the Taronga Zoo in Sydney. So much fun!
Those animals look happy. Would love to visit! Another zoo which gives animals room to roam is the San Diego Zoo in Balboa Park, a huge cultural and entertainment complex in the heart of San Diego. I hope you get a chance to visit if you ever come back to the States. Thanks for all the pics of the Taronga Zoo. Would love to meet the penguins and view a koala (if possible!).
We missed the San Diego Zoo when we visited but will add it to the list for a return visit. We were certainly happy we visited the Taronga Zoo for a day in Sydney.
