Walk Around Spokane For 2 Days

We planned a stop in Spokane for 2 days.  Driving across the U.S. from Toronto to Vancouver, we intended to detour and stop along the way. We did a half day detour and visited Mount Rushmore.  But when we reached Spokane we needed to stop for 2 days. After 4 days of driving, it was essential to get the muscles moving again. Spokane looked like a walkable city!

As we drove across the mid-west, we could not believe how hot it was in the end of August.  When we arrived in Spokane the temperatures were above 100°F.  But we were still anxious to wander out and see the town.  But we did limit our walking to early mornings and later in the day!

The downtown area was an easy 10 block walk from the Best Western where we stayed. We were amazed at how many martini bars we saw and at the broad range of Happy Hour specials. If we wanted to eat early or graze for dinner, we found it would not cost us a lot to eat in Spokane! City Hall was an interesting building decorated with carvings and colour. A lot of the buildings sported painted murals. And there was a lot of historical information about the river as a power source!

Exploring Riverfront Park on the Spokane River

Riverfront Park provided large green spaces that ran along the Spokane River. Well shaded, it offered a cornucopia of colourful and artistic sights to keep us entertained while we enjoyed the park.  The Sculpture Walk provided an outdoor sculpture garden to browse.

For the kids and the kids at heart there were water fountains, carousels, a giant red wagon slide and a small amusement park.

We missed a big treat although they were setting up while we were there. In the fall, there will be a major Chinese Lantern Festival in Spokane. From what saw through the fences, this would be a lot of fun. We were lucky we got the chance to return and saw these brightly coloured lanterns all lit up.

And if we just wanted to watch water flow gently by, we grabbed a bench on the path. We saw the power of the water from several bridges and caught a great view of tumbling water.

A Great Break In Spokane For 2 Days

When we travelled through Washington state and needed a stop on our cross country trip, it was a great plan to spend 2 days in Spokane. There was lots to see when we walked around.

What did we miss on our visit to Spokane For 2 Days? Would you agree that this is a great place to plan to stop?

  1. That is just downtown. There are 76 lakes within 50 miles of Spokane. Several ski resorts, mountain ranges and all 4 seasons to enjoy. If you love the outdoors, Spokane has got it all.

    • Great point. We will definitely head back to explore more of the country. This was a quick stop on our cross country drive but we are back visiting in Vancouver several times a year and Spokane is an easy drive from Vancouver.
