Walk Around Spokane For 2 Days
Driving across the U.S. from Toronto to Vancouver, the plan was to detour and stop along the way. We did a half day detour to visit Mt Rushmore and when we reached Spokane we needed to stop for 2 days. After 4 days of driving, it was essential to get the muscles moving again. Spokane looked like a walkable city!
As we drove across the mid-west, we could not believe how hot it was in the end of August. Arriving in Spokane, even with temperatures above 100°F, we were anxious to wander out and see the town – but we did limit our walking to early mornings and later in the day!
The downtown area was an easy 10 block walk from the Best Western where we chose to stay. We were amazed at how many martini bars we saw and at the broad range of Happy Hour specials. If you are ok with eating early or grazing for dinner, it may not cost you a lot to eat in Spokane! City Hall was an interesting building decorated with carvings and colour. A lot of the buildings sported painted murals. And there was a lot of historical information about the river as a power source!
Exploring Riverfront Park on the Spokane River
Riverfront Park provides large green space that runs along the Spokane River. Well shaded, it offered a cornucopia of colourful and artistic sights to keep you entertained while you enjoyed the park.
The Sculpture Walk provided an outdoor sculpture garden to browse.
For the kids and the kids at heart there were water fountains to run in, carousels to ride, a giant red wagon slide and a small amusement park.
We missed a big treat although they were setting up while we were there. From September 26 to November 1, 2015 there will be a major Chinese Lantern Festival in Spokane. From what we could see through the fences, this will be a lot of fun. We may try to pop down from Vancouver to see these brightly coloured lanterns all lit up.
And if you just want to watch water flow gently by, you can grab a bench on the path. If you want to see the power of the water, there are several bridges where you can catch a great view of tumbling water.
You could even take a cable car across the Spokane River to see the river from on high!
If you are travelling through Washington state or need a stop on a cross country trip, plan to spend 2 days in Spokane. There is lots to see when you walk around.
What did we miss on our 2 days in Spokane? Would you agree that this is a great place to plan to stop?
